Lens on Leadership: To Be Alive With Possibility ✨
Oct 09, 2024Growing personally and professionally is something I have always enjoyed, sought out, and craved. I like learning new things, trying new things. I like being challenged but also get stressed by those challenges. How about you?
This week’s quote is from Louise Erdrich, a Native American author and activist. I searched for a quote from an indigenous person because next week is Indigenous Peoples’ Day. This is one small nod to their many contributions, but also a way I can share in that recognition with you.
As I transition out of being mayor over the next few months and into new and old roles, I am heartened by this quote to remind myself that growing and changing are part of life’s process. How lucky am I to be able to do both. I don’t want to be dead metaphorically (or physically) but alive with possibility, growing, changing. Whether in your personal or professional (or both) lives, growing and changing can be hard but also so important to who you are and who you are becoming.
Here are some thoughts on why how this is important and how to lean into growth and change:
Embracing Growth and Change as a Leader:
- Keeps us adaptable, resilient, and engaged in our roles.
- Sets a powerful example of flexibility and courage for others to follow.
- Demonstrates a commitment to learning and continuous improvement, fostering trust and respect from teams.
Leaning into Growth:
- Shift your mindset to view challenges as opportunities rather than obstacles.
- Seek regular feedback and apply it to grow and improve.
- Take on projects outside your comfort zone to push your limits and discover new strengths.
- Dedicate time to personal and professional development to stay motivated and inspired.
The Benefits of Embracing Change:
- Leaders who welcome change don’t just adapt to the future—they actively shape it.
- Each challenge embraced strengthens our capacity to lead with purpose.
- By growing and evolving, you inspire those around you to do the same, creating a culture of continuous progress and shared success.
In leadership, courage is the foundation upon which positive change is built. Standing up for yourself—and for others—sends a powerful message that everyone’s voice matters. This week, I encourage you to consider the power of your voice in shaping the future. Whether you're speaking up in a meeting, advocating for a cause, or supporting a colleague, your words have the potential to inspire and lead.
Reflect and Act:
- Start with Self-Advocacy: Often, it's easy to champion others, but standing up for yourself can be challenging. Take small steps to voice your ideas, needs, and boundaries.
- Encourage Collective Strength: Use your influence to create an inclusive environment where others feel safe to express themselves. Encourage them to share their perspectives, especially when they feel overlooked.
- Shape the Future: Remember, leadership isn't just about the position you hold. It’s about how you lead with integrity, how you advocate for positive change, and how you inspire others to do the same.
Let’s continue to be leaders who amplify voices, champion inclusivity, and stand up for what’s right. Together, we can shape a future that truly reflects the diversity of thoughts and experiences in our communities.
